A viral TikTok mention. An unexpected celebrity endorsement. A product recommendation that suddenly takes off on social media.
For brands, these moments can deliver months’ worth of visibility in a matter of hours. Yet while marketers are often focused on creating the next big moment, the reality is that many opportunities are won or lost long before they happen.
Three of our Consumer Account Directors were recently interviewed by Agility PR and shared their views on why operational readiness, not just creativity, is becoming one of the biggest differentiators in modern marketing.
The brands that win aren’t always the fastest
The assumption that reactive marketing is all about speed can be misleading, as more often, success comes from the foundations brands have already put in place.
As Laura Hooper, Account Director at The PHA Group, explains:
“The brands that consistently win attention today are not necessarily those producing the most creative content. More often, they are the organisations that have built the capability to act quickly. Trends don’t wait for lengthy approval processes, internal meetings or siloed decision-making. By the time many organisations have aligned stakeholders and secured sign-off, the conversation has moved on.”
The challenge for many organisations isn’t spotting opportunities. It’s having the processes, alignment and confidence to act when they appear. When marketing, PR, social and commercial teams are operating in silos, even the most promising moment can disappear before a decision is made.
Every creator moment is bigger than it looks
Today’s consumer journey rarely follows a straight line; someone might discover a product through a creator on TikTok, read media coverage about it later that day, search for reviews online and then discuss it with friends before eventually making a purchase.
For PHA Account Director Natalie Garland, this is why brands can no longer afford to treat PR, influencer marketing and social media as separate disciplines.
“A single creator moment can trigger earned media outreach, reactive social content, executive commentary, retailer engagement, search optimisation and community management simultaneously, not sequentially. Success is no longer measured by individual campaign outputs, but by how effectively each discipline amplifies the others.“
The most effective brands see creator activity as the start of a wider conversation, not the end of a campaign. When teams are connected, one piece of content can unlock earned media, social engagement, search visibility and community advocacy simultaneously.
Cultural relevance starts before a trend goes mainstream
There’s also a common misconception that the goal is simply to be first. Account Director Bethany Jordan argues that lasting relevance comes from understanding audiences more deeply than competitors, not reacting more quickly than them.
“One of the questions we often get asked is: ‘How can we be the first?’ But audiences rarely judge brands solely on who got there first. They judge them on whether their participation feels authentic. A brand that joins the discussion later, but does so with creativity, relevance or genuine insight, can often generate stronger engagement because it adds something meaningful to the conversation.“
Through social listening, audience intelligence and trend analysis, brands can identify shifts in behaviour before they reach the mainstream. More importantly, they can understand which conversations are genuinely relevant to their audience and which are better left alone.
The real competitive advantage
Across all three perspectives, a common theme emerges: the brands generating the greatest impact today aren’t necessarily creating more opportunities than everyone else. They’re better prepared to recognise them, evaluate them and act on them.
Creativity still matters. Great ideas always will. But increasingly, the brands turning cultural moments into meaningful business results are the ones that have built the operational readiness to make those moments count.
