The role of Sports PR – Understanding what Sports PRs do

In the world of sports, public relations plays a crucial role, integral to the success of rights holders, brands, organizations, teams, and athletes. Public relations go beyond simply sharing information, it’s about shaping a narrative that informs, educates, and cultivates relationships with media, fans, and customers. Especially in the digital age of social media, sports PR has become a critical element in not only driving visibility but also credibility.

Our role as Sports PR’s is incredibly varied and can be defined into the following categories:

Reputation and managing public image

At the core of Sports PR is reputation management. Whether for individual athletes, teams, or sports organizations, as PR professionals, we are tasked with crafting and maintaining a positive public image, day in, and day out. It’s about fostering relationships with media to humanize athletes and brands positioning them as leaders, role models, and philanthropists to present them in a favorable light to their respective audiences.

Crisis management

On the other hand, sports at times can be ungiving and if you’re not prepared, an athlete or brand’s reputation can be lost in an instant.  Whether it’s an athlete involved in a controversy or an organization facing accusations, Sports PR professionals play the critical role of mitigating damage, drafting key messaging documents, and navigating difficult media enquires. We’re often the first line of defence so being prepared is vital.

Storytelling and brand building

Working for an agency that is born out of a newsroom, our journalistic ethos and approach by default means that we are natural storytellers. A well-thought-out and strategic public relations strategy will go a long way to ensuring that our clients are continually seen in the media verticals being read by their respective target audiences. Our approach helps shape narratives, build brands, and tell the stories that really make an impact and ultimately deliver results to our client’s bottom line.

Leveraging social media and digital

The evolution of social media and the digital transformation over the last decade has been revolutionary. The birth of platforms such as X, Instagram, and TikTok gives athletes and brands the ability to talk with fans and their audience directly, and often this is the first source of “breaking news” bypassing traditional media outlets. It means though that as PR professionals, we need to be even more agile and front-footed in our approach. Used for good, it can elevate, promote, and enhance public image, but one poorly timed post can ruin a reputation in seconds and spark public controversy.

Media Relations

The importance of building and maintaining strong relationships with the media is crucial. Not only from a personal standpoint to be able to call upon that individual to run a story or offer an exclusive but also from a brand or athlete perspective in order to build strong relationships so that athletes, brands, or teams can align with media that align with their image and values. Fostering positive relationships with sports journalists, commentators, and broadcasters is essential. Whether that’s facilitating interviews, managing press conferences, or providing ongoing press office support.

As Sports PR professionals, our role is often working behind the scenes. Arguably it’s the most important role and we need to continue to evolve and be agile with the changing demands of the sports landscape. Understanding how to shape public perception, manage crises, and build lasting brands is what we do through compelling storytelling.
