With dentists around the UK having shut their doors to the general public, keeping our teeth and mouths healthy at home has never been more important.
While going green might not be the first thing that a lot of us think of as a positive when it comes to our dental hygiene, plastic oral care products are one of the world’s biggest sources of landfill waste. Every year, the world consumes over 10 billion plastic dental hygiene products, most of which ends up in either landfill or our oceans.
Following the recent reduction in pollution levels, now is as good a time as ever to shine a spotlight on some of the oral care brands that are making a big difference to our teeth and our planet.
The Humble Co
Founded by dentist Noel Abdayem in 2013, The Humble Co are a Swedish brand that are revolutionising the personal care industry.
Designed by dentists, the company produce a huge range of vegan and chemical free personal care products, ranging from bamboo toothbrushes all the way through to natural chewing gum made from trees. All The Humble Co’s products and packages are designed, manufactured and disposed of with the environment in mind.
As well as their ethically conscious products, they also help run The Humble Smile Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that supports some of the 3.5 billion people affected by oral diseases each year. Every humble purchase also helps to fund oral care projects that support children in need in 37 countries across the world.
WhiteWash Laboratories
As well as their vast range of oral care products, WhiteWash Laboratories have also created the ‘Brush for a Brush campaign’. For every product that they sell, WhiteWash have committed to also providing a toothbrush for a child in need both in the UK and around the world in partnership with the D.E.C.A.Y Charity.
To help communicate the importance of good oral care, the charity is also developing a programme to educate young people on the importance of caring for their teeth.
Cocofloss

Cocofloss specialise in toxin-free, vegan dental floss, made using a combination of coconut and fruit oils that are sustainably sourced and then made at a family-owned factory in Italy.
The brand is Leaping Bunny certified (the gold-standard in cruelty-free certification for non-animal tested products) and offer floss refills in compostable packing in order to reduce single-use plastic and the environmental impact of their products.
SpotLight Oral Care
With big ambitions to become the first dental brand with a 100% recyclable range of toothpastes, Spotlight are well on their way to meeting that goal.
Founded back in 2016 with the aim to create the market-leading products in preventative oral care. Four years later the company now has a range of different products that combine the highest quality clinically proven ingredients and the cosmetic expertise of founders Lisa and Vanessa Creaven.
One such product is their oral care toothpaste. After noticing the huge amount of plastic waste produced by the industry, Spotlight’s toothpaste tubes are now all made from sugar cane, making them 100% recyclable, a world-first for the industry.
