Five female-founded fitness apps

It’s no surprise that last year, health and fitness apps generated 2.5 billion downloads. If you’re someone who enjoys exercising, it’s likely you’ve downloaded one of these apps in pursuit of your fitness goals – especially during the Coronavirus pandemic when access to gyms and in-person training was limited.

The market is estimated to experience a 17% year-on-year growth over the next 5 years, as more apps appear that aid all types of workouts, whether that be in-person or online.

Today we shine a spotlight on five of these apps founded by inspiring female entrepreneurs helping us on our fitness journeys.

Boxx

Boxx was founded in 2016 by former accountant Anna Samuels, who had a passion for boxing but found she had nowhere to do it whilst she was on maternity leave. Her goal was to make classes more inclusive and accessible for everyone, including other mums and pregnant women. Boxx offers both home and studio workouts across boxing, HIIT, Strength and Yoga.

They also partner with The Outrunners – a charity that host a weekly running club and use it as a tool to give back to young people in Hackney. They help build young people’s confidence and skills through activities such as a youth running club, careers events, work experience and coaching.

Shreddy

Shreddy was founded in 2016 by Grace Beverley during her time studying at Oxford University (where she also conceptualised her other business venture – sustainable activewear brand TALA.) Starting out as a social media influencer, Grace has since been recognized as one of the NatWest 20 Most Exciting Entrepreneurs to Watch and was listed in Forbes 30 under 30 in 2020.

Shreddy offers workout guides for all fitness abilities and meal-plans for every diet type. With over 400,000+ members, there is an opportunity to chat and be inspired by other women taking part. By being a part of the app you also receive early-bird access to purchase new kit launches and restocks, so you can look the part too.

WeGlow

WeGlow was founded by fitness trainer and influencer Stefanie Williams in 2020. Her passion for fitness led her to join the Welsh International Hockey Team where she played for several years before a serious injury ended her career. After searching for something to inspire her again, in 2015 she discovered weight training followed by coaching and hasn’t looked back since. Her goal was for women to feel empowered, educated and positive about their journey with their body.

You have the ability to track your steps, sleep and water intake on the activity tracker, as well as organize your nutrition and workouts using the calendar. You can choose from over 25 different gym, home or yoga guides and 1000+ workouts based on your experience, time and goal. It’s not just exercising either, there’s over 450 different recipe options with new ones added each month.

TruBe

TruBe was founded in 2014 by Daria Kantor. Her passion for sport and fitness drove her to create the app after she realised there was a gap in the market for a product that allowed people be active in a more convenient and accessible way.

The on-demand personal trainer fitness app allows users to request personal trainers directly to their home, work or local park. You can either train online or in person and there are ten different disciplines with options ranging from kickboxing to meditation.

FitrWoman

Launched in 2016, FitrWoman was designed and developed by Grainne Conefrey during her time working as a Product Manager for sports analytics company Orreco, and Senior Sports Scientist and Research Scientist Georgie Bruinvels. It is the first app to provide daily training and nutrition suggestions tailored to the menstrual cycle.

The app can be used by consumers and athletes alike. Chelsea FC Women revealed they use the app to monitor the players menstrual cycles to help enhance performance and reduce injuries.
