It is now widely understood that modern industrialised farming, and by extension, a carnivorous diet, is bad for the environment and often one’s health. In recent years people have become aware of not just the ethical and emotional arguments for reducing meat intake, but also the stress it puts on the planet, specifically in its unsustainable use of water and implications for ecosystem and soil degradation. The in-and-outs of these consequences are innumerable and would require reams of text to properly address, however, the UN nicely sums up the proximity of the catastrophe in its estimation that we have just 60 harvests left.

So what are our options? Many suggest a complete overhaul of modern farming systems, switching to a lower intensity, decentralised system and one that embraces the natural diets of many animals – i.e. grazing cattle and feeding pigs on scrap food, which both animals would be able to digest better than the currently preferred soya or corn. However, such a top-down change seems unlikely, and as is so often the case with these things, the consumer must take charge to see change. This is where the recently super-popularised diets of vegetarianism, veganism and flexitarianism come in.

The market has exploded in recent years to cater to these newly established segments, ones especially driven by millennial engagement. This has likely been helped by social media movements and awareness garnered by celebrity spokespeople, as well as a number of internationally acclaimed documentaries such as Food Inc. and Cowspiracy. Millennials have shown their interest in and commitment to healthier diets, and in five years they’ll have families and will be the target market.

This shift has prompted huge innovations in the food sector; US companies like Beyond Meat sell a plant-based burger in Whole Foods nationwide, and Impossible Foods have created a burger that sizzles, smells and even bleeds like real meat. In fact, Impossible Foods has been so successful that the critically acclaimed David Chang has introduced the ‘Impossible Burger’ to his menu at Momofuku Nishi.

For those of us over the pond, we have London-based More Than Meat, which can be delivered to your door, and the Scottish-based Mheat, who make vegan ‘cheeze’ and a range of deli meats!

With American’s consuming on average 50% more than their body weight in meat every year, and Britons only slightly lower at just over our body weight, there is clearly a lasting market for meat. These innovations in consumption provide a lasting alternative to industrial farming and could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 70%. However, for those who are most concerned with maintaining their high protein intake, there may be another entirely different alternative. Insects.

French company Jimini’s make a range of insect-based snacks, from fruity curry Grasshoppers to sesame and cumin mealworms, and the more conveniently packaged banana and dark chocolate cricket flour protein bars. As it turns out, these little insects are absolutely packed full of protein, fibre, iron and calcium and so provide a great alternative to the more adventurous individual looking to cut down their reliance on farmed animals. Although not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, insect-based foods have been praised for their minimised impact on the environment.

However, it is clear that not everyone will be willing to make this switch to a meat-free lifestyle, and this is where a number of leading labs in the USA are breaking some serious ground. Companies like Super Meat and Memphis Meats are producing real meat that is grown in lab conditions. It looks like, tastes like, smells like and really is real meat, just without the environmental consequences (and of course animal suffering).

These products offer a sustainable alternative to the meat-centric society of today. Such food innovations paint a picture of a modern meat-landscape that can feed our growing populations without jeopardising soil and water quality. Hopefully, this can do something to reduce the whopping 14% of greenhouse gas emissions that agriculture currently contributes.

Clearly, views are shifting, and people are increasingly open to alternatives, but which one will come out on top and what will the ‘foodscapes’ of the future look like?

Tess Holliday: Inspiring women or promoting obesity?

For those of you who haven’t heard of Tess Holliday, she is a plus size model from Los Angeles who is creating quite a stir within the fashion industry.

She is the first UK size 26 model to sign with a major modelling agency and has since fronted campaigns for plus sized fashion label Simply Be, and appeared in titles including Vogue.

In Tess’ own words, she is “fat and proud” and not concerned about what others think about her size. In fact, she is looking to redefine what is seen as beautiful with her #EffYourBeautyStandards campaign. As a result, she has been hailed in the media as an ‘icon’ with the likes of Cosmopolitan magazine calling her an ‘inspirational role model for women’.

Although I do commend Tess for going against the mould and showcasing that beauty is subjective and comes in all shapes and sizes, I can’t help but feel unsettled by her promotion of what is essentially an unhealthy lifestyle.

At 5ft 4ins and weighing 260 pounds, Tess is clinically obese. By her promoting being fat as acceptable, she is arguably, in turn, endorsing the health risks that come alongside obesity. Let us not forget that obesity increases the risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease, not to mention fertility problems in young women.

This, in my view, makes the media somewhat hypocritical in their praise for Tess. After all, these are some of the same people who helped to ban the size zero from catwalk shows around the world due to its unhealthy connotations. It was also during Tess’ rise to fame that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned an Yves Saint Laurent advert for featuring an ‘unhealthily underweight model’.

It seems surprising then, that many people have applauded a model who promotes that ‘fat is fabulous’ to her 900,000 Instagram followers and 1 million Facebook fans. Imagine the backlash if a clinically underweight model was to do the same, and that activity was to receive the same level of public praise.

Research shows that in the UK 60 per cent of teenage girls are overweight and 20 per cent of young mothers are obese. Actively promoting an unhealthy body size – be it size zero or a size 22 – can be dangerous for body-conscious young adults who, rather than aspire to a healthy ideal, look the replicate their idols’ beauty standards.

Surely this is a time for brands and the media alike to be praising those who promote overall health and fitness, rather than a specific body ideal. Campaigns like ‘This Girl Can’ and Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign should be applauded.

My 90 Day shape up: against all the odds I reach the end of cycle one

Shape up plan - The Body Coach

I’m not going to lie, the 90 Day Body Coach shape up plan has been a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Although the recipes have been easy to cook and the exercise easy to fit in and, dare I say, enjoyable to do, there have been moments where I have struggled mentally.

Joe (aka The Body Coach) does warn you at the beginning that the shape up plan will be a physical and mental challenge but I thought that would be for the people who are totally overhauling their lifestyles. (I already cooked everything from scratch, ate relatively healthily and was prone to the odd bout of exercise).

Whilst during the working week I found the shape up plan easy to stick to, especially with the ongoing support from my boyfriend, Paul, it was the weekends that I struggled with. I found that’s when my lifestyle had to adapt. I used to, more often than not, go out for a burger and chips at a pub or on a Sunday night have a takeout curry from Woondall, the Indian located literally below my blog of flats!

It wasn’t just the food either, it was also the alcohol. Most people are prone to the odd tipple at the weekend and I’m no exception. Where I really tried to stay dry for the first month I honestly found it nigh on impossible, which says a lot about how much I (tragically) rely on alcohol. That’s something I’ll address – again – in January. I endeavoured not to get drunk and stick to one or two G&Ts or red wines if alcohol was being consumed. Although these occasions were infrequent, and I only really let rip one night at a bank holiday BBQ I went to, I do feel naughty having had indulged.

I tried not to let myself feel too guilty though, because as Joe says, life is for living, and I didn’t want to start resenting the shape up plan.

I also have a confession…. The weekend after I wrote my Day Ten blog I had a really hard time. I actually cried, which is embarrassing to admit, but I was seeing some old uni friends and panicking about sticking to the shape up plan and the guilt I’d feel for slipping. This is when I had my first sip of alcohol on the plan after I’d talked it through with Paul and decided I wasn’t going to feel guilty. Anyway… on the Monday I came back to work feeling strong and like I’d pushed myself over a hump and I was back on the wagon. Then, at lunch my colleague, Tom, started munching on a pack of ginger nut biscuits and asked if I was allowed them. Obviously, the answer was a big fat glaringly obvious NO!

Try as I might I couldn’t get those gingernuts off my mind, I could imagine their spicy goodness as I sat at my desk trying to push myself through the overbearing sugar craving I was going through. Then all of a sudden, my body overriding my head, I got up and hunted down the gingernuts. I looked high and low until eventually, I remembered a conversation I’d heard about secret biscuits in the boardroom. I stalked in there trying to make sure no one saw me, grabbed a pack and hot-footed it to the toilet… that’s right, the toilet. I sat in there and devoured all three. The last one I stuck in my mouth WHOLE. The shame. I then proceeded to pick the biscuit out of my teeth and casually arrived back at my desk, no one any the wiser.

After gingernut gate, feeling wholly ashamed of myself, I climbed, for the second time, slowly and agonisingly back on the wagon and managed to stay there for a while.

To be totally honest, I have been out for a few meals (it’s my favourite past time), but I’ve always made good choices and stuck to something similar to what I would have been having that night anyway. I didn’t eat carbs out of turn and avoided starters and desserts.

I might have slipped up a few times food wise, but never when it came to the exercise. I have been doing various 20-25 minute HIIT workouts four-five times a week and can feel myself getting stronger. Where a 30-second interval of mountain climbers or burpees once filled me with dread I can now power through to the end and be ready for the next round! I’ve even got more steam in me than Paul, which is an added bonus.

When the time finally came to send Joe my measurements and new photos I genuinely wasn’t convinced I’d done enough and couldn’t see the difference in myself, despite Paul’s protestations. I just thought he was being nice. However, when Joe replied congratulating me on my hard work and put the two photos next to each other I could really see the change.

Although I didn’t lose any weight, I did lose an inch on my chest, waist and hips and half an inch on my arms. I’m really not bothered about weighing less and am more interested in feeling good, so that’s a positive start in my book! Also, Joe is really emphatic about not worrying about what the scales say, and I agree with him.

Seeing the pictures has given me the drive to give Cycle 2 my all. This cycle involves weights which Joe says will do wonders for me. I’m going to have to take a trip to Argos to buy some equipment and turn the spare room in my flat into a home gym.

So with some trepidation, but also lots of newfound excitement, I embark on Cycle 2…
