Ten Inspirational Women in Broadcast Tech
Earlier this year, leading broadcast media industry magazine TVB Europe cited sobering statistics for gender imbalance, estimating a staggeringly low 1:50 female to male ratio in the broadcast sector.
Having worked across various aspects of the broadcast industry for the past ten years, I have experienced this first hand, being one of a very small minority of women present at trade shows and one of the even fewer women sitting around the management table.
In general, the UK does appear to be addressing female inequality in the workplace, with Vince Cable recently announcing that the 25% target for the number of women on FTSE 100 company boards (voluntary set by the former trade minister Lord Davies in 2011) is close to being met with only 17 more female board members needed to meet it. However, there is no doubt that the broadcast industry is lagging behind.
Fortunately, in PR, the story is brighter and I’m now in the fortunate position of working not just for an agency that is 60:40 weighted towards women, but also the first company that I have ever worked for that has a female member of the board. Although the figures for broadcast aren’t exactly encouraging, there are a number of hugely inspiring women who are bucking the broadcast trend and paving the way for others and I thought that the time was right to tell their story.
With this in mind, I wrote an article for TVB Europe’s April edition, highlighting ten women who inspired me during my career in broadcast, each one a leading figure in a distinct part of the broadcast chain.
