Last week was the final Entrepreneurs and Business book club of 2012 as we got together for breakfast to discuss our latest book – The Godfather by Mario Puzo.
Being one of the most iconic organised crime novels of all time, it was a slightly unorthodox choice for a business book club, however the discussions about business lessons to be learned from the book made for a lively breakfast.
Some of the many key themes we discussed were:
• “It’s just business” – the idea of not taking things personally in business is central to many of the characters in the story. This is shown particularly in the character of Tom Hagen who is frustrated that he is not allowed to lead more during war.
• “Don’t let your enemies know what you’re thinking” – the slightest slip of the tongue by Sonny with Sollozo is picked up on by the Godfather and the ramifications are massive. An important lesson.
• Planning for the future – the plans for the Godfather’s succession is made meticulously and a long time in advance.
Though the Corleone family operate in a way that would not be advisable to any of our clients(!), at the heart of the story is an entrepreneur who has built a colossal empire from nothing, analysing that development of the Corleone business is fascinating and lessons can be learned for any business.
